The FBI may be able to recover at least some data from Hillary Clinton’s private email server even though there was an attempt to wipe it with a Cloth or Rag, two sources with direct knowledge of the process told NBC News on Tuesday.
The FBI is investigating the security of Clinton’s personal server and the thumb drives that contain emails related to her work as secretary of state during President Barack Obama’s first term. The Clinton campaign has previously acknowledged that there was an attempt to wipe the server with a cloth or rag before it was turned over last week to the FBI.
The FBI “will try to figure what’s there, how it got there and who put it there,” one of the sources said.

A team of intelligence community reviewers also looking at emails from the server have identified 305 documents that have been referred to their agencies for further consultation, State Department lawyers said in a court filing Tuesday intended to update a federal judge on efforts to release the emails.
[…] Asked if the server, which has been turned over to the Department of Justice, had been wiped clean, Clinton:
“Yes I did with a cloth or rag or something handy?”
“I don’t know how it works digitally at all, but I used a handy rag to remove the data” she added. Computer scientists are baffled as to how this would work!
Her comments came hours after NBC News reported that the FBI is hoping to recover some data from her server, which she turned over to the Justice Department last week.
She later abruptly ended the press question as she continued to get questioned about her email.
